Taxi driver fatally shot on Rockford’s west side identified
The name of a cab driver who was fatally shot early Saturday morning has been released.
Charles Johnson, 33, was found by police slumped over in the driver’s seat in a Spee-Dee taxi van in the 500 block of North Avon Street just after 2 a.m.
Police were responding to a suspicious vehicle complaint when they spotted the van parked in the grass in front of one of two vacant homes on Avon Street. Johnson, who had been shot in the upper torso, was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to police, the taxi was sent to an address on that block to pick up a fare.
Detectives are investigating a possible robbery and homicide. Anyone with information regarding Johnson’s death is asked to call the Rockford police at 815-966-2900 or Crime Stoppers at 815-963-7867.
