Florida, USA — 27-year-old Uber driver Adrian Harper was cited for negligence after accidentally shooting a passenger in the ankle last Sunday.
According to him, he stopped to pick up Bailey Braun with her boyfriend, Alcy Zaldivar from Broward to Aventura.
However, he didn’t realize he had his finger on the trigger guard as he tried to secure his handgun. Mr. Harper accidentally fired the weapon, hitting Bailey behind him in the ankle.
Furthermore, Mr. Harper initially placed the gun on the seat next to him.
At first, the teenagers didn’t realize it was the sound of a gun going off.
“I didn’t feel the gunshot,” 15-year-old Bailey said. “When I lifted my foot over the seat I saw blood coming out.”
The bullet had hit Bailey’s ankle.
Another passenger who was carpooling with the couple, ran to the nearby police department when she heard the gunshot. Police immediately arrived on the scene.
Moreover, Bailey said she remembers the driver coming over and “freaking out.”
“You shot me,” Bailey allegedly told the Uber driver.
“I assumed it was a gunshot, but I thought it was someone from the outside shooting at us,” Alcy said. “It was crazy.”
Bailey was taken to Joe DiMaggio’s Children’s Hospital and received proper treatment for her wounds. Doctors estimate that it would take around five weeks for her to recover.
Uber’s spokesperson claims that Mr. Harper no longer has access to the app and that incident “is deeply troubling and our thoughts are with the rider and her family as she recovers.”
The Uber driver showed them his concealed carry license and the vehicle was searched. Moreover, Mr. Harper was cited for crimes against person-culpable negligence inflict harm, the report states.
