Atlanta, USA — Officials arrested former Lyft driver George Bass after stealing nearly $18,000 from a 67-year-old disabled woman.
According to reports, Cassie Mitchel is blind and an amputee who relies on her husband to drive her around town.
However, in September of last year, her nurse decided to book a Lyft to her dialysis appointment. Mr. Bass became her Lyft driver on that day and took her to the Greenbriar Mall in southwest Atlanta.
During the ride, the two allegedly became friends, so much so that Mrs. Mitchel hired him to be her caretaker. They made a deal wherein Mr. Bass will drive her to all of her appointments without going through the Lyft app.
“I said I would give him $100-$150 per month,” Mrs. Mitchel said. “Take me to the grocery store, like Walmart or Dollar Tree.”
However, while she was away for six weeks in rehab, the Lyft driver used her card for his own purchases. The total amount of his spendings cost up to $18,000.
“He quit coming to pick me up on Sundays to go to church. He quit doing everything that me and him used to do together,” The 67-year-old said. “I feel horrible. I feel violated.”
Furthermore, Mrs. Mitchell also agreed to give Mr. Bass a $3,000 loan in exchange for the title to his car. However, the vehicle didn’t belong to him and didn’t work.
“Because I’m blind doesn’t mean I don’t know what’s going on,” Mitchell said.
Mrs. Mitchel says that she is hoping the police will do something before he could victimize other people.
“He needs to be put away so he can’t keep preying on people like me,” she said. “I wouldn’t have did you or you mama like that.”
Atlanta Police Department have arrested the former Lyft driver and are now pressing charges. Furthermore, a Lyft spokesman confirmed that the driver is no longer working with the company.
