Suspect behind bars for killing East London taxi driver

London, UK — The suspect behind the murder of a 39-year-old East London taxi driver have been arrested, according to police.

The taxi owner allegedly received a call from an unknown man to pick him up at Vincent, East London on Friday, June 14 at about 4am. The suspect apparently wanted to go to Amalinda.

The taxi owner then phoned his driver and told him to fetch the man to which he obliged. However, when the cabbie’s girlfriend called him by 6am, he did not answer his phone.

Consequently, the girlfriend immediately contacted the taxi owner. She told him that her boyfriend hasn’t come home yet and he wasn’t answering her phone calls.

They reported the situation to the police, who launched an investigation in Butterworth.

Butterworth police spokesperson, Captain Jackson Manatha said they found the 27-year-old suspect near Kei Bridge, Butterworth. As the confronted him, the suspect went defensive and fought with the police.

Fortunately, civilians came to the rescue of the police and assisted in arresting the suspect. It happened near Nciba locality, Ngquthu village along Kei Cuttings, Butterworth.

According to reports, police found the taxi driver’s body in the back seat of the taxi with stab wounds.

The suspect is now facing multiple charges including murder, kidnapping, and car hijacking. Furthermore, he will appear in the Butterworth Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.

Police investigators have not been able to identify the motive for the murder.
